The biggest change in our politics is that 30 years ago, it was understood that you can be a conservative Democrat or a Liberal Republican. Issues like abortion and gay marriage didn’t determine if you were a Republican or Democrat. It was basically the role of government – should government act to give poor people a shot, or should government be hands off and then clamp down on crime.
Now we’ve tried to stamp out conservative Democrats and Liberal Republicans, making that synonymous with party affiliation. This isn’t good.
What’s happened is that White Workers have joined a party that goes against their economic interests, and feel “forced out” of the party that would support their economic interest. I’m aware of this and choosing my politics based on it.
