Certain economic positions that Obama took went out the mainstream for a Democrat, and would have aligned more with a Republican. I believe some of this was tolerated because of the historical significance of electing the “first” Black President.
But we can’t in the future be soft on neoliberalism. If we want those policies, we’ll vote Republican instead. It’s the job of Democrat to offer something else, even if at certain times of history, they have to sit and wait their turn.
